This policy explains what personal data The Tech Shots collects, why, how long we keep it and the choices and rights you have. It is our notice under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (the DPDP Act).
Who is responsible
The Tech Shots (thetechshots.com) is published by CS Studios, India, which decides how and why your personal data is processed (the "Data Fiduciary" under the DPDP Act). For any question or request about your data, contact our grievance officer; their details are on our grievance redressal page.
In short
- You can read the whole site without giving us any personal data.
- Analytics and personalised-ad cookies stay off unless you allow them, and you can change your mind at any time from Cookie settings at the foot of every page.
- We collect your email address only if you sign up for the newsletter, and your name and email only if you write to us.
- Your saved stories, reading progress and display preferences stay in your browser; we never receive them.
- We never sell your personal data.
Newsletter
- What: your email address, the newsletter you chose, where on the site you signed up, and when you confirmed.
- Why: only to send you the newsletter you asked for.
- Consent: nothing is sent until you confirm by clicking the link in our confirmation email. We keep the wording you agreed to and the date as our record of your consent.
- Withdraw: use the unsubscribe link in any email; it takes effect straight away. Withdrawing is as easy as signing up.
- How long: while you are subscribed. Sign-ups that are never confirmed are deleted after 30 days. After you unsubscribe we keep only your address marked "unsubscribed", so we never email you again.
Messages
- What: your name, email address, the article link if you give one, and what you write, when you use our contact or grievance form.
- Why: to reply to you and, for grievances, to meet our duties under the IT Rules, 2021. This is information you choose to give us for that purpose.
- How long: until your message is dealt with, then two years, after which it is deleted.
Cookies
- Essential: none are needed to read the site. Staff who sign in to our newsroom use a login cookie.
- Analytics (optional): Google Analytics, only if you allow it. It shows us which pages are read and how fast they load. IP addresses are anonymised.
- Personalised ads (optional): Google AdSense personalises ads only if you allow it. If you do not, you still see ads, but they are not based on your browsing; Google may still use cookies to limit how often an ad is shown and to prevent fraud. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
On your first visit we ask before turning optional cookies on. Change your choice at any time from Cookie settings at the foot of every page.
Other data we handle
- Page views: we count how many times each article is read, on our own servers, to show what is trending. This count uses no cookies and no personal data.
- Abuse protection: to stop spam, we keep a scrambled (hashed) form of the network address used to sign up or send a message, never the address itself, and delete it after 90 days.
- Server and security logs: our hosting and content delivery providers keep short-lived technical logs to run the site and protect it from attacks.
- Stored in your browser only: your theme, text size, saved stories, which stories of Today's Edition you have read and your cookie choice. These never leave your device. Clear them from your browser settings or the Saved page.
Who we share data with
Only with the service providers who help us run the site, under contract and only for that purpose: Google (analytics and advertising, if you allow them), our hosting and content delivery providers, and our email provider. Some of them may process data outside India, as the DPDP Act permits. We disclose data to authorities only when the law requires it.
Your rights
Under the DPDP Act you can:
- ask what personal data we hold about you and how we use it,
- ask us to correct, complete, update or erase it,
- withdraw your consent at any time (this does not affect what we did before you withdrew),
- nominate someone to exercise these rights for you if you die or are unable to,
- raise a grievance with us about how we handle your data.
To make a request, use the contact form or write to our grievance officer, and tell us the email address you used with us. We may ask you to confirm it is your address before we act. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Keeping data safe
We protect personal data with reasonable security measures, including encrypted connections, restricted staff access and scrambled tokens in place of raw links. If a breach affects your personal data, we will inform you and the Data Protection Board of India as the law requires.
Children
The Tech Shots is a general news site for adults. Our newsletter is for readers aged 18 and over, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has given us their data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change affects how we use data you have already given us, we will ask for your consent again where the law requires it.
